ICD 9 coded for history of atrial fibrillation

There is no direct code to represent history of atrial fibrillation in ICD 9 CM. However if the patient is on medication for atrial fibrillation with drugs like Coumadin, then we can code atrial fibrillation as current condition.

Patients with atrial fibrillation often remain on chronic anti-coagulation therapy with drugs like Coumadin or Warfarin . Hence if one finds these drugs in the medication list then we can code atrial fibrillation as current condition even if it is not treated during the current visit.
